Sarah and Keith’s wedding

Sarah is one of my oldest friends. We met early our freshman year of college and forged a strong bond as two women who were intent on taking over the journalism world at Truman State. Luckily we had our eye on different publications – the school newspaper, The Index, for her and a student produced regional travel magazine, Detours, for me.  I truly believe that Sarah put the circumstances in place for Aaron and I to meet each other. For that I will be eternally gratful to her.

Our senior year, Sarah had the ominious job of hiring all of the editors for the school paper. Aaron, confident as always, applied as a sophomore and was the leading candidate with an outstanding portfolio and the recommendation of the outgoing photo editor. Sarah has a particular distaste for fraternaties and their members; so when Aaron arrived at the interview in a Pi Kap sweatshirt – he was out of the running and accepted the assistant photo editor position instead.

A few weeks into the year, it was clear that the actual photo editor was not equipped or talented enough to fill the roll. I definitely felt that pain. I designed the front of the features section (the absoluetely best job at the paper in my opinion) and the photo editor did all my shoots. One night in a fit of desperation after a particularly hideous shoot I stormed into the office, pointed at Aaron and said “You’re a photographer. Help me!.” That was the beginning of the end of me.  Aaron helped me cobble together a front page on a local band with some awesome editing on the pictures the band had on file. Aaron was in charge of my shoots from then on, and I was always amazed at his ability to take my musings and turn them into dynamic pictures. Our personalities also meshed well and shortly after that fateful day we officially became a couple. We’ve been together ever since.

So when Sarah found the love of her life, I offered to shoot her wedding as our gift – without checking with Aaron. He was willing but grumbled about how he wasn’t good enough to be photo editor but he’s good enough to shoot her wedding. He also threatened to wear his fraternity letters to the wedding … not that he’s bitter. I think if Sarah had it to do over again she’d hire Aaron, but from my place I’m glad she didn’t. Who knows how things would have worked out then?

Sarah and I worked together after college at The Olathe News and she was a bridesmaid at my wedding. So on her wedding day, I did something we don’t normally do – I spent most of the day with her, starting with a trip to the salon to get her hair done. I was so happy to really capture the day for my friend.

Then we headed back to her house to pick up a few essentials (the groom’s tux and ring made the list) and see her cats.

Sarah was surrounded by some of her closest friends as she finished prepping. Her friend Karen served as makeup artist for the bride.

The flowers arrived and then it was time for Sarah to see her groom.

The groomsmen braved the frigid weather for a few shots outside Drexel Hall.

We kept the girls inside and used their dressing room for some fun shots and a little inspiration from John Michael Cooper.

Keith and Sarah agreed to brave the cold too. I’m glad because I think Sarah’s coat looks so cute with her wedding attire!

We had to put them in the coat closet at Drexel, which produced my favorite image of the day.

Then it was time to get these guys married!

Back at Drexel for some food, toasts and dancing!

Before I forget!

Keith - I’d also like to express my sincere thanks for the wonderful job the two of you did (especially Aaron who I saw the most). As a guy I never really thought all that much about wedding photos, but these photos will be treasured belongings for not only us but all of our friends and family. Our wedding day seemed to fly by so quickly, I’m so glad we have such beautiful photos to immortalize and give life to some of our most precious memories. Thank you again.
